<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
This month as part of International Women's Day celebrations I have joined a women's blogging group - sharing encouragement and support and most importantly making my voice heard. Something that I take for granted all too easily.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
So today I'd like to introduce to you a remarkable and inspiring woman who is a true role model to me and who, in my opinion, is not as well known as she ought to be. Her name is Madeleine Vionnet and she was one of the greatest fashion designers and couturiers of the 20th century. Her heyday was the interwar period from 1918 - 1939 when her influence was on a par with Coco Chanel. Her decision not to reopen her ateliers after WWII is one of the main reasons that she fell into relative obscurity.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
You can find out more about her style <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madeleine_Vionnet" target="_blank">here</a> and <a href="http://www.vionnet.com/madeleine-vionnet" target="_blank">here</a>, but what I'd like to tell you about is her truly modern vision as a business woman. At a time when working conditions were not high on the list of priorities for most companies, Vionnet introduced a number of measures to increase the welfare of her staff. She provided free dental and health care to her entire workforce, bought chairs with seat-backs for her seamstresses and even provided holiday, maternity and sick leave. Her own experiences as a young apprentice inspired her to do better for her own staff.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://41.media.tumblr.com/5a0d7d7a8b66f7725f0389cc2e174598/tumblr_nthnhwfEWc1ud0hp8o1_500.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://41.media.tumblr.com/5a0d7d7a8b66f7725f0389cc2e174598/tumblr_nthnhwfEWc1ud0hp8o1_500.jpg" height="236" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Her designs were so groundbreaking and popular that they were frequently copied. Think of 'Hollywood Glamour' and you will undoubtedly be picturing one of her distinct bias cut gowns. She was a pioneer in trying to protect her intellectual property and meticulously photographed each design in front of a three panel mirror in order to document - in one picture - the front, back and side views. These were catalogued and she was part of several high profile, though ultimately unsuccessful, schemes to stem the flow of copied designs into the marketplace.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Her vision for women is another aspect that I still find so relevant in 2016: she wanted to liberate women's bodies from the constraints of the corset and allow them to move. An often quoted saying of hers is: <i>When a woman smiles, then her dress should smile too. </i>Comfort inspiring design - now there is an idea I can agree with!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<i><br /></i></div>

March has arrived and although today's rain does not really inspire spring cleaning this time of year usually does make me want to blow away the winter cobwebs and have a clear out. Top of my list is sorting through my wardrobe to create more space for what I really want and do wear, eliminating the many items that I haven't worn in years. I hate opening my stuffed drawers and squashed hanging space, but the task at hand seems so over-whelming that it's hard to know where to start. If this sounds like your wardrobe too please keep on reading as I'd like to share a few strategies with you to make spring cleaning it less daunting.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5cjhklFKPjw8bgH6tE66r4bkU76chFxcu8UXIP6H8B7romyvJjZOhHuBgag1gRum7RJz4DN9XeV0D558_fmJ8aVflfc8hMD2YlwENw20M6sl8DkpxmORPJ5UpgQ0a8W3tqd_Xq3qnxzQv/s1600/Hangers.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5cjhklFKPjw8bgH6tE66r4bkU76chFxcu8UXIP6H8B7romyvJjZOhHuBgag1gRum7RJz4DN9XeV0D558_fmJ8aVflfc8hMD2YlwENw20M6sl8DkpxmORPJ5UpgQ0a8W3tqd_Xq3qnxzQv/s320/Hangers.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
First off - a stress free way to decide on what to keep and what to give away is by turning around all the hangers in your wardrobe so that they hook onto the rail from back to front. Set yourself a time limit - a few months or one year. Then, every time you wear an item, turn the hanger round and put it back the right way. At the end of the time period you will clearly see what clothes you wear and which are staying put. Clear out all those which are still facing backwards and voila! you will be left with your favourite and, I'm certain, most flattering pieces.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Once the weather gets a bit warmer make sure to pack up and store your winter items. You will not only create more room in your wardrobe, but come the next winter you'll be able to get out all these items and feel as though you've just been on a huge shopping trip. Changing your wardrobe according to the seasons isn't just practical it also helps keep your clothes feeling fresh and new for years. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Gather up all clothes that no longer fit and which you therefore don't wear. Be honest with yourself and assess whether you are likely to fit into them again in the future. Decide which ones to let go of and donate them to charity. Consider replacing items that you loved like for like with your current size. If the thought of hitting the shops fills you with dread, consider enlisting the help of a personal stylist to put the fun back into shopping for you. If you need a recommendation do get in touch. </div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Another option is to ask a tailor to recreate your favourite trousers, dress or jacket and tailor it to fit your current size. Having an item to start from can make the prospect of having an item tailor-made less daunting. You already know that the style suited and flattered you before. You will be involved in the process of creating the garment, choosing the fabric and colour - a whole new way to discover fashion.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Host a swap party for your friends. Make sure you have a good mix of sizes and ask everyone to bring a few pieces they no longer wear or have never worn. Provide some drinks and nibbles and enjoy an evening of good company and style. It is quite likely that the top that never worked for you looks amazing on your friend and vice versa. Don't forget to trawl through your jewellery box too!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Ask your employer to host a suit drive for International Women's Day. You'll be making space in your wardrobe whilst helping women get started in their careers. Here are a few organisations you might wish to consider for this: </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://www.smartworks.org.uk/">www.smartworks.org.uk</a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://www.dressforsuccess.org/">www.dressforsuccess.org</a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I hope these tips will help you get started and inspire you to start your own wardrobe detox. Let me know how you get on in the comments and / or add your own ideas. </div>

Whilst keeping up with my online fashion network this morning I stumbled across this image on <a href="http://www.netaporter.com/" target="_blank">Net-a-porter's</a> <a href="http://www.instagram.com/daraforddesigns" target="_blank">Instagram</a> feed:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbYlmiZkwktcjspVlqZZMO73uCvD1X41Z1wIPzt00Qlh3iTLjFi2QGE7Wnpbdd8FE7equRhTbKcTRV3pE4p0nydRur5KGJFwTsfAvV_Ymp9JltG2iMmsq-904lAWLTdj12Qp-724KeCIjB/s1600/Prada_quote.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbYlmiZkwktcjspVlqZZMO73uCvD1X41Z1wIPzt00Qlh3iTLjFi2QGE7Wnpbdd8FE7equRhTbKcTRV3pE4p0nydRur5KGJFwTsfAvV_Ymp9JltG2iMmsq-904lAWLTdj12Qp-724KeCIjB/s1600/Prada_quote.jpg" height="400" width="398" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The quote spoke to me because it encapsulates the essence of fashion for me. What you choose to wear says more about you than anything you say immediately afterward. It is your instant business card before you've even reached into your pocket and reveals a great deal about how you feel about yourself, what is important to you and what message you wish to convey to the outside world. Do you like to take risks or play it safe? Is your style trendy or timeless? Are you messy or neat? Disorganised or a stickler for detail?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Reading these visual clues is something we all do subconsciously and changing or adapting those first impressions later on is a slow and arduous process. So it is important to get that first impression right and to put some thought into the image you wish to convey. There is of course no right or wrong style, merely social conventions which you can choose to adhere by or (sub)consciously reject. But whether you spend hours in front of your wardrobe planning your outfit or slip on the upper most shirt in your pile the impact is the same.</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A great way to demonstrate this effect is by doing an exercise I was asked to do during my fashion design degree. You can do this with a small group of friends, acquaintances or work colleagues. In fact the less well you know each other the better. You will each need paper and pen: In small groups of around 3-4 silently evaluate each other's looks from top to bottom, beginning with hairstyle and ending with shoes. Make sure to take into account the small details such as jewellery, make-up, the condition of the clothes, seam details, etc... Now write down your assumptions about the character traits of the other people in your group based on these observations. You will be surprised by how much you will put down on your sheet of paper. The final step is to take turns presenting your findings to the larger group and then asking the object of the evaluation whether your assumptions are correct. What you will find is that we each seek to identify ourselves with a particular 'fashion tribe'. There is a wonderful photography project called '<a href="http://www.exactitudes.com/" target="_blank">Exactitudes</a>' that captures this phenomenon in a beautiful and gently humorous way. There is no right or wrong outcome to this exercise - it is merely a tool for demonstrating what impact your appearance has on others. It can be valuable to run this as an image building exercise in your company, particularly for sales teams or other outward customer facing roles. It could also be a great resource for individuals before attending an interview or it could form a small workshop session in your local coaching or networking group. If you do run this exercise, please let me know how it went and what insights you gained.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Today is a beautiful sunny day here in London and although it is cold outside the warm colours are making me think of Spring. For many this is that special time of year when they have chosen to marry and some of you might be looking around for your perfect wedding dress or outfit. Creating a wedding dress for a bride-to-be is a very special process and one that I enjoy immensely. I have created a few wedding dresses over the years and today I'd like to share a small selection with you. To my mind the dress should be as unique as you are. It doesn't have to be white or long or indeed a dress. The important thing is that the outfit you choose is comfortable, suits you and gives you a sense of occasion.</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Having a wedding dress tailor-made can be a daunting decision. You might have doubts about whether the final product will really be what you want. What if you change your mind along the way? Will you be able to imagine the final dress and look from a drawing and fabric swatches? I'll try to answer a few of the more common questions below and please feel free to add your own by commenting on this post or by getting in touch: info@daraford.com</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: red;">Step 1: Initial consultation</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The process usually begins with an informal chat about your ideas, time frame and budget. Maybe you have a clear vision of what you want or maybe you'd like some advice on what suits your shape. It is a good idea to visit a few shops and try on some wedding dresses & evening gowns to see what shape you feel comfortable in and what details you might like. The beauty of having your dress made for you is that you can pick and choose features of various dresses and have them combined into your dream gown. That way you also don't have to miss out on the fun of wedding dress shopping with your best friend!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
If you are ready to go ahead with an order I will then take your measurements and three photographs of you (from the front, side and back) so that I can draw directly onto a template of your exact body shape. This really helps to determine the right dress proportions for you. We will discuss what kind of fabrics and what quality of finish you'd like.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: red;">Step 2: Design sketches, fabric choices & basic patterns</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After this initial consultation I will start by drawing up some designs for you to consider, source suitable fabrics as well as making up a very basic block pattern to your measurements. At your first fitting I will adjust the basic pattern and from this I can create your actual wedding gown design. We will go through the design sketches together and discuss details, shape and fabric. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: red;">Step 3: First fitting of design in cotton fabric (toile)</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
At your second fitting a toile of your chosen design will be ready to try on and I will have ordered in the fabric for it too. This is usually a very exciting moment as you will get a real sense of what the finished dress will be like.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: red;">Step 4: Second fitting in final fabric</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Following adjustments to the pattern your dress will now usually be ready to cut and stitch together. At your third fitting the nearly completed dress is checked over and minor adjustments can be made to ensure the perfect fit. I recommend that this fitting be no more than two weeks before the wedding as a lot of brides tend to lose weight before their big day on account of the stress of organising it all! Should you wish to add any accessories such as a veil this can also be done now.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: red;">Step 5: Completion</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Following this final fitting I will complete the dress and any accessories you ordered and then your dress will be ready for your special day! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As you can see - the entire process is a journey of several weeks from start to finish (I usually require a minimum of 8 - 12 weeks, although a fast-track service is available) and your outfit will develop organically throughout this time. I find that the initial idea often evolves into something more personalised throughout this time and as we get to know each other. My aim is to create not just a dress or an outfit for you but a feeling that will stay with you long after your big day has passed.</div>

As you may know I have been creating leather clutch bags alongside my clothing line and just as I enjoy creating bespoke garments for my clients, creating a bespoke handbag is equally rewarding. The lucky lady this bag was commissioned for had just given birth to a beautiful baby boy and it was to be her gift on this special occasion. I have often wondered why baby changing bags seem to be designed to match the baby's more than the parents' (or in this case the mother's) style. After all it is the parent who carries the bag everywhere and we don't want to give up our adult style just because we now have a baby in tow. So I was really thrilled to create this elegant yet functional baby changing handbag. It is made of Italian calf skin leather, has a vintage floral canvas lining and is roomy enough for everything a new mother might need to lug around on a daily basis. There is an interior place holder for a baby bottle and a couple of interior pockets both large and small to separate items. The stand-out design feature however is the decorative strap on the outside that unclips so that the bag can be attached to the handlebars of a pram. And once the baby has grown out of nappies this bag will simply be a beautiful handbag with space for a water bottle, laptop, files and whatever else a busy professional woman needs to carry.<div>

This is why stylists are so important to the industry and can make such an impact to an individual's or a fashion label's look. A couple of months ago I offered to provide a wedding dress for a collaborative photo shoot a friend of mine was putting together. She is a talented <a href="http://www.flawlessbysangeeta.com/" target="_blank">hair & make-up artist</a>, specialising in Asian bridal styles, but she also experiments with new innovative looks. Her and the <a href="http://www.facebook.com/WaleedOsama.photography" target="_blank">photographer's</a> theme was a gothic inspired bridal look - definitely new territory for me: my default styling runs towards the more classically elegant. So I was really intrigued to see what they would create and how they would interpret my dress. Have a look at the amazing pictures below - it's quite a transformation! And I think the theme came off beautifully.<div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Today was my first day showing and selling my designs at <a href="http://www.duckpondmarket.co.uk/" target="_blank">Duck Pond Market</a>. It was a lovely experience and I met some very nice people, both customers and other sellers. The atmosphere at Duck Pond is so friendly and welcoming which is what drew me in in the first place. I am very pleased to have been a part of it and hope to be there many more Sundays in the future!</div>

I created this dress and belt for Gurcharan back in May of 2012. She had asked me to design a cocktail dress that would go with a pair of red shoes she had bought some time ago. This is the beauty of bespoke tailoring; you can start with the accessories and then get the clothes to match them, rather than buying a dress and then searching for the matching shoes and belt. Although you can't see it on this picture the shoes have a metallic silver heel which we picked up on in the choice of dress colour. The dress is cut from a beautiful silk satin cloth with a silk chiffon upper section. The skirt is cut on the bias which creates a lovely drape from the hips down. It was hemmed after it had been hanging up for a while allowing the fabric to drop. The hem is therefore perfectly straight and not wobbly as you would find with a ready-made dress.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It was a pleasure to create this fully bespoke dress and I hope that Gurcharan will enjoy wearing it for years to come.</div>

Happy New Year! What better way to launch into 2013 than this wonderful photo I found in my mail on returning from my Christmas break. Doesn't she look stunning? This is what clothing is all about: Complementing your looks and making you feel confident and comfortable. For me it's wonderful to see that an outfit that was designed four years ago still looks great today. You can really see the quality of the cloth and cut shine through. Timeless fashion indeed. It's always great to see my designs modelled by my customers, so if you have a picture of yourself wearing your Dara Ford piece and you'd like to share it with me please do send it through.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I recently had the pleasure of creating a bespoke cocktail dress for a pregnant client who was attending a wedding in Poland. She came to me with a piece of turquoise satin that her aunt had hand-embroidered long ago. It's a beautiful motif of a wheat sheaf with golden leaves seemingly drifting away in the wind. Creating a dress from a limited piece of fabric(less than two metres) and using the full motif to its best advantage whilst respecting the grain of the cloth was no small challenge, but one I relished. The resulting asymmetric dress gently drapes over the baby bump, but will, because of its bias cut, look just as beautiful once the baby is born and my client has regained her usual shape. Here's what she had to say: 'We had a brilliant time at the wedding in Poland and I had a lot of comments on my dress so thank you so much. It felt great!'.</div>

In addition to the shop on my website I have launched an etsy store. This shop will feature one-off designs and allow customers to order bespoke and made-to-order items. It is really intended as an extension of my web shop. A place for me to showcase new ideas and the oddities I feel inspired to make from time to time. Check it out and as always I am grateful for feedback.<br />

Sorry for the extended break from blogging, dear readers. I have been totally caught up with non-fashion related things. My partner and I have bought our first home together, unfortunately it is not really a home yet, but is in need of complete refurbishing which we are almost entirely doing by ourselves with some help from friends and family. Thought a fashion designer can't wield a power drill? Think again - my new nickname is Demolition Dara! :)<br />
<br />
Anyway - I am very sorry to report that I have not been very busy designing a new collection as I ought to, but all this house building stuff has been making me think more about how I want to run my business in the future. I have not finished my ponderings yet, but look out for new things happening on this site in the next few months. I should be getting myself sorted out soonish.<br />
<br />
In the meantime my existing collection is as timeless and stylish as ever and the silk pieces in particular are a great addition to your Spring Summer wardrobes. I'm stealing a phrase from my friend <a href="http://karlandida.blogspot.com/2010/04/one-of-my-best-friends-dara-is-amazing.html">here</a>: Buy Less. Buy Well. Thanks for the blog love. xx<br />

I hope 2010 will be a great one for us all with new exciting prospects and challenges ahead.<br />
<br />
To start the year off I'd like to invite you to share your pictures with me wearing your Dara Ford outfit. As you know it is my mission to design beautiful clothes for real bodyshapes - and how better to show that off than by you being the model?<br />
<br />
Here's one to start this off - thanks to H. from Germany for sharing.<br />
